County Border Signs

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2015 made provision for the erection of traffic signs marking the borders of historic counties. Many such signs have since been erected across the country. The Historic Counties Trust is working with several local authorities on a project to systematically mark historic county borders.

During his year as the ceremonial mayor of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Councillor Ross Patterson raised over £14,000 for the erection of historic county roads signs and kindly donated that money to the Historic Counties Trust. With the cooperation of North Yorkshire Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, this money was used to erect a North Riding of Yorkshire sign on the A167 on Croft.

The Trust is now working with several local authorities and the Yorkshire Ridings Society on a pilot project to see the borders of Yorkshire and its ridings fully marked. Our longer term aim is to seek funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to see this project rolled out to other counties.
